ATV and UTV insurance in Virginia Beach. Theft, liability, and damage coverage for off-road vehicles Virginia doesn't require you to insure. Free quote.

ATVs occupy a strange gap in Virginia law. They can't be driven on public roads. They don't need to be registered. And the state has no insurance requirement on them. So most people assume their ATV is either covered by their homeowners policy or doesn't need coverage at all. Both assumptions are usually wrong.

Here's why coverage matters even without a mandate.

Someone gets hurt on your property. A friend's kid flips your quad on your land and breaks a collarbone. You're liable. Medical bills, potential lawsuit, and legal defense costs all land on you. If your homeowners policy excludes motorized vehicles (many do), you're paying everything out of pocket.

Your ATV is stolen. ATVs and UTVs are among the most stolen powersports vehicles in the country. They're portable, valuable, and easy to move on a trailer. A $12,000 side-by-side disappears from your garage overnight. Without a policy, that's a total loss you absorb.

Damage during transport. You can't ride your ATV to the trail in Virginia. You have to trailer it. A loading accident, a highway collision while towing, or a strap failure at 60 mph can total your machine before you ever get to ride it. Your auto policy covers your truck. It does not cover the ATV on the trailer.

Riding on someone else's property. You ride on a friend's land, an off-road park, or leased hunting property. If you cause damage or injure someone, your homeowners policy won't cover you because you're not on your own property. An ATV policy travels with the machine.

ATV Insurance Questions Virginia Owners Ask

Answers about off-road coverage, homeowners policy gaps, and insuring ATVs Virginia doesn't require you to cover.

Does Virginia require ATV insurance?

No. Since ATVs cannot be driven on public roads and are not required to be registered, Virginia has no insurance mandate for them. But the state's silence doesn't eliminate your risk. If someone is injured while riding your ATV or if it's stolen, you're responsible for the costs without a policy.

Does my homeowners insurance cover my ATV?

It depends heavily on your carrier and your specific policy. Some homeowners policies include limited liability for motorized vehicles on your property, but many exclude them. Off-property liability is almost never covered. Physical damage to the ATV itself is not covered by homeowners insurance. Don't assume you're covered. Ask your agent or bring us your declarations page and we'll tell you exactly where the gaps are.

Can my teenager ride an ATV in Virginia?

Yes, with age and engine restrictions. Riders must be at least 16 for full-size ATVs. Ages 12 to 15 can ride ATVs with engines of 90cc or less. Under 12 is limited to 70cc or less. Helmets are required for all ages. Make sure your policy covers operators in your child's age group.

Is my ATV covered while it's on the trailer?

Your auto policy covers your tow vehicle. It does not cover the ATV on the trailer. If the ATV falls off, is damaged in a highway accident, or is stolen from the trailer at a gas station, you need ATV-specific coverage to pay for it. Transport coverage is included in most ATV policies, but verify the limits.

Can I get a discount by insuring my ATV with my other policies?

Often, yes. Many carriers offer multi-policy or multi-vehicle discounts when you bundle ATV coverage with your auto, home, or other powersports policies. We compare bundled and standalone pricing to show you which option costs less.
