What Is Boat Insurance and Why Virginia Beach Boaters Need It

Boat insurance is a marine policy that covers your vessel for physical damage, liability, and related risks while on the water, in storage, or in transit. It works separately from your auto and homeowners policies, which either exclude boats entirely or offer only limited coverage for small, low-horsepower vessels.

Virginia has no state law requiring recreational boat owners to carry insurance. The Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) registers motorized boats and sailboats but does not ask for proof of coverage. That said, most marinas on the Chesapeake Bay, the James River, Smith Mountain Lake, and across Hampton Roads require $300,000 to $500,000 in liability coverage before they'll rent you a slip. If you dock at a marina, you almost certainly need a policy.

Even without a slip agreement, operating on the Bay or the Atlantic without coverage puts your personal assets at risk. A collision, a fuel spill, or a passenger injury on open water can produce costs that go well beyond what most families can cover out of pocket.

Boat Insurance Questions Virginia Beach Boaters Ask

Answers about coverage on the Chesapeake Bay, marina requirements, and protecting your vessel year-round.

Is boat insurance required in Virginia?

No. Virginia has no state law requiring recreational boat owners to carry insurance. However, most marinas across the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads require $300,000 to $500,000 in liability coverage as a condition of your slip agreement. Even if you trailer and launch, operating without coverage leaves your personal assets exposed if someone is injured or you cause damage on the water.

Does my auto insurance cover my boat trailer?

It depends on your policy. Some auto policies include limited coverage for trailers, but others don't, or they cap it at a low amount. If your trailer is damaged in a towing accident or stolen from your driveway, you may not be fully covered. We check your auto policy and let you know if you need separate trailer coverage on your marine policy.

Am I covered if I take my boat to another state?

Most marine policies cover your boat in U.S. navigable waters, but the specific territory depends on your carrier. If you plan to take your boat to the Outer Banks, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, or further, let your agent know so we can make sure your policy covers the full area you'll be boating in.

What happens to my coverage during winter storage?

Your policy typically stays active year-round, covering theft, fire, storm damage, and vandalism even while your boat is in storage. Some carriers offer reduced rates during the lay-up period when the boat isn't in use. We can check if your carrier offers that discount and make sure your off-season coverage is in place.

Can I get a discount on boat insurance with a safety course?

Yes. Most carriers offer a discount if you've completed a boater safety course approved by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. Virginia requires the course for anyone born on or after July 1, 1988 who operates a motorized vessel, so you may already have it. If not, completing one can lower your premium and is a good idea regardless.
